Thanksgiving

Prepare to be engulfed in blog. It's taken a few days to get this together, and this one's gonna cover my Thanksgiving break. But first, let me introduce you to a couple new features. At the bottom of my blog you can now find a Loopt journal, which I update using my iPhone and it geo-locates where I've updated. It's not perfect, as I've come to notice, but it's an interesting touch. Then, I've also gone mobile with blog posts, as seen in the last post. Yet another wonderful feature of the iPhone. You can geo-locate on that, too... But anyway, Thanksgiving break...

Rather than give you a regular play-by-play of vacation, I want to do something different. In the past week I have slept in many different beds, and yes, that does sound dirty. But I want to rank the places I've slept from worst to best, starting at number 5 with the least comfortable, to number 1's most comfortable. So, here we go!

*Number 5: My bed at home*
Strange, that a bed I've known so long is the most uncomfortable in this list, but it was a close tie for 4th, at least...
I slept at home for two of the days of break; Tuesday night before leaving, and Saturday night upon our return. Tuesday, I'll admit, wasn't that bad. After packing up at the dorm and then spending the rest of the day at home doing pretty much, well, nothing (except laundry), my bed wasn't so bad, 'cept for the wiggly jiggly of it's waterbed-ness, and it was a little cold, and very quiet as compared to the dorms. Definitely want a new bed before Summer break, though. But Saturday is what made it the worst. I was ready to go to bed, but honestly, my room was freezing cold. I had to put on sweatpants, two pairs of socks, my hoodie, and for a while, a scarf and a hat. Just to sit in my bed, wrapped in blankets, trying to sleep. I was pretty much up half the night, and when I finally did sleep, I slept until almost noon.

*Number 4: The car*
Yeah, we spent a lot of time in the car over break, logging almost 30 hours probably on the road... Sleep wasn't so bad, but the contorting of my body to get comfortable was, well... I could've done without it. It wasn't so bad, though, making our pile of bodies in the back, me and the dogs...

*Number 3: Super 8 hotel bed in Iowa*
On Friday we woke up early, having been in Cooperstown, still. But we were up early to make a trip down to Iowa, which lasted about 7-8 hours, and then when we were there we went to dinner with family before going to bed. Now, I guess this so much isn't the bed's fault so much as I just couldn't sleep for some reason. But still, I'd had better sleeping conditions over this break.
The next morning we were up and met with family again, before heading to a relatives funeral, the reason a lot of the family made a trip over such a distance. And then a couple hours after the funeral we were off again, this time heading home on another long car ride that went well into the late hours...

*Number 2: Inflatable bed at Grandma's house*
Usually at Grandma's I sleep on a fold out spring bed, but she got rid of it so now I get a nice big inflatable bed to snooze on. It was very comfy, I must say. That's why it's number two! Of course, then there's the morning clean-up, but not so bad as far as beds go.
Cooperstown is where we spent our actual Thanksgiving, having lunch at one house, then dinner at another, so we could see all our relatives up in Cooperstown, North Dakota.

*Number 1: The dorm bed*
Yes, suprisingly, I've come to know it as home. It has the familiarity of sounds well into the night, a heater that keeps it as warm as Summer, and the best part: it's not water-bed squishy! Woo. I was more than glad to be back Sunday night.

So that's it for break... Ooh, except I've been excited to share this part.

So one night while we were discussing the potential of holding family weiner dog races with my Grandma Marlene, who has two dachshunds of her own (and us having two as well), I sent a text to both my Uncle Dustin and his wife, Liz. She's thought dachshunds would be a great addition to their new family. Unfortunately, I had the wrong number in my phone, so I ended up conversing throughout the night with a stranger. I could've ended it sooner, but I wanted to see where the conversation led. Here is that story:

November 27th, 2008
6:30pm
Me: You need to get a weiner dog or two. We want to start annual family weiner dog races, and we can't do it with only 4 of them.
7:56pm
NotMe: That would rock but who is this?
Me: Chase
NotMe: I think you have the wrong number.
Me: Aw, sorry. Swear I had the right one. So who is this?
NotMe: Well who do you think this is?
Me: Well, I thought this was Liz.
NotMe: No sorry this is Amanda. Sorry...
Me: It's cool. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving... Sorry for the mixup.

Now, I figured around this time she was done talking with a stranger but nope...

8:18pm
NotMe: No problem it was pretty funny hope you had a good thanksgiving too. Enjoy some pie.
Me: Oh, I did. Delicious pumpkin pie.

Here's where it gets entertaining, as if it wasn't already...

8:50pm
NotMe: Pecan pie so much better. D=
Me: I think not. Pumpkin all the way. With cool whip on top.
NotMe: But it isn't as sweet as pecan, there for not as good. But whip cream on the other hand is always good, especially when it's home made. :3
Me: I find this impromptu arguement with a wrong number to be humorous, but pumpkin pie is still better. :P

9:05pm
NotMe: Well my parents never told me not to "text" to strangers. Fine well i'll let you belive you won.
Me: Ya, I know, this is awkward. But I win so yay for me. It was fun talking with you, anyway. I guess you can consider the conversation over. I gotta get up early so I'm off to bed.
NotMe: Hah it's all good... It was pretty interesting. Bye though. :]

The day after the conversation, we ended up meeting up with Dustin and Liz, and I told them about it, and Dustin said he's called that number before, so we concluded that it was Liz's old number, and it was just all around funny.

So to wrap it up for Thanksgiving break, let me just throw in a quick timeline of events...
Tuesday => Packed in the morning, left dorm and hung out at home
Wednesday => Traveled to North Dakota
Thursday => Thanksgiving in Cooperstown, ND
Friday => Travel to Iowa, with stop in Minnesota (Dustin & Liz)
Saturday => Funeral and travel home to Manhattan
Sunday => LAAAAAAZZZZZYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

In another note, I don't think before this trip that I was aware so many people read my blog. Turns out several family members follow my adventures. Neat.

Anyway, more to come. Later!

  1. Heyy, thanks for your comment on my blog. I think I'll just post freely whenever I want, no matter how many i believe to be reading it. haha.
I'm shocked that your waterbed made last! I have one and it's my favorite thing in the world...although my apartment bed here at school DOES have the heater right beneath it so it's so warm...hmm maybe I'll have to rethink my rankings...
The weiner dog race sounds hilarious. If that ever happens, you should def take pics and post them.
Also, about the random text convo- that has happened to be so many times lol. I always carry on random convos with the strangers who accidentally text me or vice versa. A little randomness never hurt anyone.
